Insomnia-RX
Ingredients
Suan
Zao Ren- Ziziphus Jujuba
This herb is the chief herb in Dr. Vickerds
formula, which means the formula was constructed around
the effects and potential of this herb. The herb
nourishes the heart and liver and calms the spirit (the
spirit is the inspirational manifestation of the seven
passions). The herb is used for irritability,
insomnia, palpitations, and anxiety all for which are
caused from deficient blood (low hemoglobin) night sweats
or abnormal sweating. Experiments using decoctions of
this herb given orally illustrate sedative and hypnotic
effects. These effects were produced regardless
if the time of day, with or without the induction of
caffeine.
Fu
Shen- Poriae Cocos Pararadicis
This is a specific part of Poriae Cocos Sclerotium,
which clings to the small roots and has a small amount
of root attached to it. The primary herb Fu Ling
is a tuber shaped fungus that grows within a root system
of a pine tree. This herb is considered stronger
and better for calming the spirit.
Ye
Jiao Teng- Caulis Polygoni Multiflori
This herb nourishes the Heart and Blood and calms
the Spirit. It is used for Deficient Yin or Blood
patterns with insomnia and irritability or dream-disturbed
sleep. It is sweet, slightly bitter, neutral and
enters the Heart and Liver channels.
He
Huan Hua- Cortex Albizziae julibrissin
This herb calms the spirit, but its focus is primarily
on the relationship between the heart and the liver
energy. It promotes the free flowing constrained
Liver Qi, while invigorating the blood.
It is especially useful when preoccupation poor memory,
or irritability is the result, of constrained emotions.
Gan
Cao- Ridix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis
This herb does everything. Licorice root is
one of the wonders of herbal medicine. I have
used it because it supports almost any cause including
one of its most useful functions, which is to bind all
herbs together into a synergetic balance effect.
Bai
Zi Ren- Semen Biotae Orientalis
This herb also nourishes the Heart and calms the
Spirit without leaving the person feeling sedated.
It also moistens the Intestines and help with night
sweats. It is sweet, acrid, neutral and enters
the Heart, Liver and Spleen channels.
